1st International Scientific Conference Globalization of migration, anti-immigrant parties and xenophobia: Reflections on European Societies and States of the 21st Century is organized by Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies, Zagreb and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Split.

1st International Scientific Conference Globalization of migration, anti-immigrant parties and xenophobia: Reflections on European Societies and States of the 21st Century has four thematic units:

  1. Globalization of migration and global migration
  2. Migration, asylum and security issues in the European Union and South East Europe (the Balkan and the Mediterranean route) in the context of a risk society
  3. The phenomenon of anti-immigrant parties and xenophobia in the EU in the 21st century
  4. The impact of migration globalization on Croatian Society and State in the 21st century

Today’s society is an expression of the second modernity, its main features being the phenomena of globalization and migration. Both phenomena require a complex research approach as they shape everyday life and affect the transformation of societies, identities and cultures. Precisely for these reasons, but also due to recent events and challenges faced by the European Union, this project aims to gain insight into the changes triggered by globalization and migration, especially in western societies marked by negative demographic trends.

Globalization of migration is a process referring to migration in the global age at the turn of the 20th to the 21st century. It is the latest segment in the history of migration. With regard to the globalization of migration, global migration is a phenomenon referring to people on the move, determined by various push & pull factors. Within the context of global migration, we are discussing contemporary migration trends, such as the asylum crisis in Europe, the unprecedented rise of the number of refugees, an increase in the proportion of female migrants in the total migrant population, the discrepancy in immigrant integration, the danger of terrorism and hostility towards migrants. In the short-term, the European Union faces several challenges relating to the issues of globalization, demographic, climate changes, and their impact on migration, which are to be further elaborated in this project proposal, but also simultaneous reactionary processes in the form of renationalization, an anti-immigrant political discourse, the foundation of anti-immigrant parties and the rise of xenophobia in Europe.

The 1st International Scientific Conference will be place to discuss on the impact of the globalization of migration on Croatian society and state in the 21st century, considering that by entering the European Union, the Republic of Croatia became a part of the global migration arena.

We consider a scientific approach necessary for drafting regulation politics, scenarios and migration strategies. Additionally, Croatia is faced with the problem of a decreasing total population (demographic deficit), due to a discrepancy between the number of births, deaths, and emigrants. Having this in mind, it is necessary to analyze the demographic dimension of globalization and its reflection on Croatian society and state, which is the focus of this project proposal.
